Rosettes, the style set’s detail du jour — plus more trends to know

Looking for a late blooming summer fashion trend? Step up to the podium, then, because the street style set are embracing the rosette in all its glory once more. Last seen on Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, the showgoers at the recent Copenhagen Fashion Week took first prize, with rosettes being pinned to scarves around necks and even worn macro-style as tops.
On the catwalks, golden 3D flower appliqués and belts were on show at Rotate, and Skall Studio placed them on lace blouses. If you want to ease yourself into the trend, Loewe’s leather floral bag studs (£95) are a good place to start.
Forget Torres truffle crisps and Perello olives, the cult deli item millennials are going mad for are Fabbri Amarena cherries. Bottled in syrup and stored in blue and white ceramic pots (which you save and display in your kitchen, obvs) these dark, sticky cherries, grown in Bologna, are a bestseller at the online foodie store Sous Chef (£13), which also sells mini Fabbri jar fridge magnets (£7.50) to keep superfans happy when they run out. Food lovers will know British cherries are in season right now, but other chic cherry buys include a jar of Cherry Rocher’s candied cherries steeped in kirsch (£27.50, souschef.co.uk), for use in a super-kitsch cocktail, or you could buy handmade ceramic cherries from the interiors brand Folie Chambre (£24 each, foliechambre.com) for your fruit bowl. They’re not edible, sadly, but they’ll last long after summer is over.
It wasn’t long ago that the interiors crowd were scrubbing their shiny brass taps with vinegar in a bid to give them a more modish patina. Now, aged brass is being used for sinks and splashbacks, a rich and unexpected departure from enamel and tiles. The LA-based design darling Jake Arnold is in on it, as are the reclamation specialists Retrouvius, which has repurposed brass kick plates to line the walls of bars. Elsewhere we’ve seen it on cooker hoods and even skirting boards. Top brass.
If Cate Blanchett walks the red carpet, we’re usually paying attention. But if Cate Blanchett walks the red carpet in a top made of 102 antique spoons, then we’re really paying attention, as was the case on the press tour for the actress’s latest film, Borderlands, where she wore a look created by Ellen Hodakova Larsson. The Swedish designer has been capturing the gaze of the fashion set since the launch of her label, Hodakova, in 2021, and has dressed a host of famous faces, including Emma Corrin, who recently wore a black minidress made of upcycled belts, with other custom pieces seen on Julia Fox, Kylie Jenner and Dua Lipa. Hodakova Larsson, who is a finalist in this year’s prestigious LMVH competition, is on a mission to establish the first fully sustainable fashion house, and uses only upcycled materials and found objects. So, while tops made from spoons and dresses made of briefcases may sit on the, let’s say, less wearable side of the fashion fence, we’ll be watching to see what else this rising talent has in the bag.
The latest TikTok sensation has arrived and you’ll be pleased to know it’s not another dance trend or daft make-up hack. This time it’s the type of place you might spend a wholesome Sunday afternoon that is going viral: Hever Castle, the 13th-century Kent seat of the Boleyn family. Amassing more than five million likes across its videos and more than 160,000 followers, Hever has tapped into Tudor fever and TikTok is hooked.
One video features a costumed lookalike strolling the grounds and, with 18,000 comments and counting, highlights in the “Henry VIII search history” section include, “Anne Boleyn ankles showing”, and “Am I a Catholic or Protestant Buzzfeed quiz?”. Hever is hot on the heels of other British heritage and charity organisations vying for the crown of TikTok’s favourite account. See also the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (five million likes) and the National Trust account, which has opted for a meme-based social media strategy. Who will come up roses in the War of the TikTokkers?
Was that the flash of a camera? Most likely, yes, though the picture wasn’t taken with an iPhone, it was taken with an Olympus M760 (or something like that, anyway). Yes, the digital camera is back as part of the Gen Z nostalgia wave for all things early Noughties. There’s internet It girl endorsement too, from Bella Hadid, Devon Lee Carlson and Addison Rae, who are all part of the compact camera crew. The camera to covet? The Nikon Coolpix model is proving so popular that Google searches for it are up 8,000 per cent year on year, and for the first time in 13 years sales of digi cams are on the rise. See also the hundreds of memes about “that one camera friend” — ie, the designated member of the group tasked with taking, downloading and distributing the night out’s pictures at speeds that could rival Getty Images. Now, where did we put that charger?
September is coming, which means it’s time to get back to business. And a beautiful handbag is just the thing to do that with. Loewe’s olive leather Flamenco bag is what new season dreams are made of. The bag features a detachable leather strap as well as an alternative chain version and it’s the perfect accompaniment to your “new uniform”.
